Technological regimes and innovation in services: the case of the Italian banking industry

Article Abstract:

A theoretical model for understanding the 'smart automation' regime in the banking industry was developed. The regime, which stems from the second wave of office revolution that occurred after the 'mass automation' regime, is analyzed with respect to the impact of information technology diffusion driving demand-pull variables for innovations in banking services. The model's validity is discussed in the context of a study of Italian banks' electronic payment systems.
