Effects on academic culture of shifts from oral to written traditions: the case of university accreditation

Article Abstract:

The changes in academic culture resulting from a two-year process of reaffirmation of accreditation at a public university are examined. Specifically, the various verbal, written and organizational responses of academic subcultures to a request by a regional accrediting association for a written summary of their present and future activities are analyzed. The analysis indicates that the oral-literate continuum is present in every literate population as individuals and subcultures shift between oral and literate strategies to adapt to their external agencies and their evolving environment, roles and functions.
