Female-headed households: poverty, and the welfare of children in urban Brazil

Article Abstract:

There is a need to analyze female-headed households, poverty and child welfare because of their implications on the antipoverty programs of Brazil. Factors to be considered include the fact that women earn less due to wage discrimination and the occupational segregation of women in Brazil. There should be special intervention from the government because of the tendency of the children to stay out of school. Women also do not have enough hours to work, care for the household and take care of the children all at the same time. These and other factors should be studied to ensure that programs directed towards female-headed households are more effective.

Female-headed households and female-maintained families: are they worth targeting to reduce poverty in developing countries?

Article Abstract:

Directing poverty reduction programs towards female-managed families is essential because women carry the triple burdens of poverty, gender discrimination and the absence of support as household heads. They need direct intervention in terms of income-earning opportunities and child support. Further studies are needed for designing and implementing programs because of the diverse categories of female-headed households. The origins of poverty, family formation and family headship must be studied. Government and nongovernment experiences must also be analyzed to provide a comprehensive picture of the situation.
