From High School to Work in Japan: Lessons for the United States?

Article Abstract:

The Japanese high school system may have some elements that enable graduates to transition more successfully to the labor market than US graduates. However, Japan ranks its high schools and statistics regarding employment of graduates cannot be analyzed in the same way as US schools. Japan's emphasis on hierarchical organization and the importance of test scores in junior high school are unfamiliar elements in the US educational system, and Japan's job-placement system is administered by local public employment agencies. Comparisons between the two systems must take these factors into account.

Step to college: moving from the high school career academy through the 4-year university

Article Abstract:

This article evaluates high school career academies and their influence on college entrance and outcomes. The author argues that students from career academies tend to be higher academic achievers, but the low level of graduation from universities demonstrates career academies do not ensure postsecondary education success.
