Science Ethics and its Role in Early Suppression of the Pfiesteria Issue

Article Abstract:

Several false allegations appear in David Griffith's article on the Pfiesteria issue. Griffith falsely states that Pfiesteria does not present a serious health threat, that there were no official acts to suppress the issue, that scientific incompetence and unprofessionalism caused misidentification of the organism, and that Pfiesteria is an issue of affluent white people. The role of science ethics in environmental/health issues is also considered.

Regarding Pfiesteria

Article Abstract:

The effect of Pfiesteria piscicida on public health has not yet been determined, despite Dr. David Griffith's contention that the threat is low. The study of North Carolina watermen conducted by Dr. Griffith does not completely settle the issue.
