From construction to context: gender through the eyes of the transgendered

Article Abstract:

Transgender people present a wide range of gender identities. They highlight the fact that gender is much more complex and diverse than many people realize. An investigation of the transgender experience fosters a deeper understanding of gender within the framework of sexual identity, thus allowing an enhanced appreciation of human potential. The transgender movement has started to challenge specification of sex at birth and the routine use of sex information by official organizations. An understanding of transgender experiences may also raise the profile of the gay and lesbian rights movement.
