Frustrating desire: On repens and repositio, or the attractions and distractions of digital games

Article Abstract:

Two game characteristics repens and repositio, which deal with the internal, temporal organization of a game, are analyzed to explore the attractions and distractions of digital games. The balance between repens, which appeals to a player's desire to discover, explore and be surprised, and repositio that allows retry, return and replay a game to get it better, chiefly determine the attraction of the game while also hinting at basic elements in learning theories and social theory.

Practices of calculation: Economic representations and risk management

Studies operating on the background of the sociology of scientific knowledge conceive calculation as situated in the practice of the participants engaged, the technological tools used and their requirements. The practice of calculation, which is central to the economic practices, is explored using Heidegger's notion of Gestell wherein the 'calculation if something' and the 'calculation with something' are analyzed.
