Helping health care professionals on issues of intimacy and sexuality among the aging

Article Abstract:

A training program was conducted among Israel's health care professionals to help them develop a more positive approach toward sexual intimacies among the aging and to promote a recognition of the aging as sexually intimate humans. Participants in training sessions were given the chance to talk of various aspects of sexuality and aging, and the problems that they faced in their daily work with the elderly. Participants were also taught to use the PLISSIT Model in working with the elderly on sexual health issues. The model involves four steps, namely, nonverbal environmental cues, verbal cues, basic training in human sexuality, and referral network.

The pause: a closer look at menopause and female sexuality

Article Abstract:

The term menopause has negative associations. By calling this time period in women's lives The Pause, rather than menopause, we can view it more positively. A number of aspects of female sexuality after menopause are examined: attitudinal barriers, painful intercourse, hormones, sexual sensitivity, orgasm, contraception, post-menopause, masturbation, decreased levels of sexual desire and increased levels of sexual desire.

What doctors and others need to know: six facts on human sexuality and aging

Article Abstract:

Doctors and other health care providers need to be aware that older people are sexual, and need sexual contact. Six observations about elderly people and sexuality provide guidelines for doctors and other health workers. The observations stress that sexuality changes with age, and that society tends to deny the sexuality of older people. Despite obstacles imposed by society, older people can enjoy active sexual lives.
