Homophobia: a weapon of sexism

Article Abstract:

Homophobia is used as a tool for social control of women. The belief that homosexuality is an illness has been disallowed by the American Psychological Assn and yet homophobia persists because people are unwilling to accept someone who does not fit into their perception of society. This is especially true for women who do not conform to the social situations that support male control and dominance. Homophobics use lesbianism to control strong women because true or false accusations of homosexuality could cost women their jobs, children, family's support, community support and even mental health.

Where are the children of the rainbow now?

Article Abstract:

The New York City Central School Board created a guide to multicultural education called 'Children of the Rainbow' to combat racism leading to situations such as the Howard Beach murder of a black man. However, parents objected to the inclusion of gay lifestyle information and professional career suggestions for women. These objections revealed the necessity for sexual identity and social role information to prevent sexism and homophobia as well as the importance of involving parents in the planning process for curriculum changes.

Sexual orientation education and homophobia reduction trainings

Article Abstract:

The demand for sexual orientation education and homophobia reduction trainings is increasing because of the large number of violent homophobic incidents reported as well as gay suicides. Sexologists and gays will be called upon to dispel myths and misunderstandings about homosexuality through creating personal connections between a gay instructor and the participants. However, the need to integrate gay information into all courses is still evident. Sample topics for a homophobia reduction course are included.
