Hugo Munsterberg: victim or visionary?
Article Abstract:
Historical treatments of Hugo Munsterberg have been less than adequate. Munsterberg was an early leader in the application of psychology in business and industry, was central to the development of psychology as a science in the United States, and wrote and spoke on a broad range of issues. This article covers his contributions and examines possible reasons for his obscurity. Among those reasons are the various transitions occurring in psychology during his active period, his own personal characteristics, the tension between the United States and Germany before World War I, and his untimely death. Although Munsterberg has name recognition among contemporary industrial-organizational psychologists, few are aware of his substantive contributions to the field. Harvester Reaches for New Internal Style

International Harvester Co. has suffered a slump for the past three years. In retaliation, it has begun a program to change its corporate culture. It is developing new ways of operating. These efforts are being made speedily so that bankruptcy can be avoided. Overseas reporting lines have been streamlined. Staffs have been trimmed. Local executives are being used as managers. The company is divesting itself of extraneous concerns. Nearly $200 million was taken in from divestitures in 1982. In 1983, $153 million was made through asset sales. The company continues to lose money, however.

Retrofitting a nuclear lab
Article Abstract:
The upgrading of the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research Building at the Los Alamos National Laboratories, New Mexico, involves dead-man braces along with a large external foundation system to protect the building from lateral loads. The project requires the minimization of the structural retrofits to the interior of the building due to nuclear operations inside the building. The designing of leak-proof doors, windows, expansion joints and other points of penetration need special attention due to the sensitive nature of the building.
