Jini out of the bottle

Article Abstract:

Sun Microsystems is to release the Jini software technology, developed by Chief Scientist Bill Joy, on Jan 25, 1999. Jini creates a platform on which devices of all types can interact as a 'community.' Devices display their electronic business cards, or Java objects with the information and code required to link two devices. The technology is not visible to users, and computing thus becomes a form of service. Jini also permits tasks to be shared by a number of devices, and could therefore have a significant impact on the economics of computing. Its success will be determined by whether Sun can get it adopted by the computer and consumer electronics industries.

Korea and East Asian exceptionalism

Article Abstract:

The economic theory of exceptionalism has impacted many East Asian cultures. Based on the notion that economic dynamism is attainable if unfettered by Western environmental or human rights, exceptionalism requires authoritarian politics to be implemented. Its application in Korea, however, has replaced authoritarianism with a more democratic structure that acknowledges the interrelationship between citizens and the state.
