Industry's response to market liberalization in China: evidence from Jiangsu Province

Article Abstract:

The efficiency and productivity of China's industries since market liberalization reform and the reverse on import substitution was imposed are assessed using Jiangsu province as a case study. Results show that there has been significant increases in efficiency and productivity aside from more specialized production patterns. However, comparison with expected rates of increase suggests that Jiangsu may not be a typical case and that the economic situation in other provinces will need to be investigated as well.

A comment on "Industry's Response to Market Liberalization in China: Evidence from Jiangsu Province."

Article Abstract:

Most of the conclusions reached by Penelope B. Prime in her paper "Industry's Response to Market Liberalization in China: Evidence from Jiangsu Province" are valid, although some of her research was flawed. For example, Prime appears to have used coefficients that resulted in errors in the calculation of the production functions.
