Innovation in the management of Italian cities

Article Abstract:

Case studies of how Italian cities facilitate innovation in urban management are presented. These include city projects concerning transportation, re-use of waste, rehabilitation of historic heritage, promotion of citizen participation and social housing. Some of the case studies discussed are Parma's transformation of plastic waste into building materials, the implementation of social housing in Reggio Emilia and the renovation and conservation of Siena's historic center.

Innovations for urban renaissance in Finland

Article Abstract:

The national government of Finland has implemented several urban development projects to cope with the urban challenges that the 21st century will bring. Some of these projects concerns the innovation of urban transportation, improvement of urban metabolism, economic reorganization of urban areas and promotion of social cohesion and integration in cities. By completing all these projects, the government hopes to enhance urban development and the environment of the country.

Step by step! - the Model-Urban-Ecology Planning Game in Germany

Article Abstract:

The Technical University Berlin, in behalf of the Federal Ministry of Spatial Planning, Building and Urban Development, implemented the Model-Urban-Ecology Planning Game in two German municipalities, namely, Schwabach and Altenburg. The planning game was administered to find and test strategies that may lead towards ecological urban development. Strategies that were used are those that have been proven successful in other towns or cities.
