Institutional and socioeconomic constraints on the second-generation green revolution: a case study of Basmati rice production in Pakistan's Punjab

Article Abstract:

The institutional and socioeconomic conditions which may hinder the success of the second-generation Green Revolution were examined based on a case study of rice production in Punjab, Pakistan. Results revealed a significant difference in input level and resource-use efficiency. Resource-inefficiency was linked to education, fertilizer application timing, transplanting schedules, water stress, labor, village location and off-farm business.

The Structure of Rice Production in Japan and Taiwan(*)

Article Abstract:

Japan can restore rice production efficiency in its Non-Hokkaido region through contract farming. This policy decreases production costs for small farms and decreases the price of rice. The acreage control program and the large scale tenant system have had a deleterious effect on efficiency and costs. This information was discovered because of a comparison of the similarities of the Japanese and Taiwanese economies.
