Low-cost housing: a benefit for employers

Article Abstract:

Involving the business community in the Comprehensive Housing Assistance Strategy planning process mandated by the National Affordable Housing Act (NAHA) can enable local and state governments to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the law. Housing should be of interest to companies since they can be adversely affected by the absence of low-cost housing and the existence of deteriorating neighborhoods. There are quite a number of business enterprises, in fact, that are responding to these conditions by providing housing benefits to their employees. Employer-assisted housing programs can expect some help from the Department Housing and Urban Development as mandated by the "HOME" program of NAHA. Cultivating relationships with employers is the first step that local and state governments interested in creating NAHA-supported employer-assisted housing projects should take.

Scattered-site success story

Article Abstract:

The Lexington-Fayette Urban County Housing Authority in Kentucky has effectively blended public housing developments into existing neighborhoods. The agency's construction of 20 three-bedroom units has demonstrated that scattered-site housing can have a positive effect on existing neighborhoods. The architectural features of the units include atrium back doors, cathedral ceilings, and split-faced block along the foundation. The agency determined which families would move into the units from existing housing authority apartments on the basis of such criteria as housekeeping records, previous compliance with lease provisions, and history of rent payments.
