Mobility and labor market segmentation: the urban labor market in El Salvador

Article Abstract:

The sectoral mobility or movement of males and females in the labor market of El Salvador is substantial. The patterns show variability in mobility and compensation by level of education. There is segmentation, especially for the female population. However, it is not so pervasive. This may have resulted from the not so accessible pre-labor market characteristics. Distinctions of a number of versions of the competitive labor markets model consistent with observed patterns were given.

Education and off-farm work

Article Abstract:

Farming households achieve maximum benefits when members with more schooling are allowed to work in off-farm work. Part of the reason is that as members achieve higher rates of education, they can quality for wages that are higher than wages that could be earned working on a farm. Another reason is that non-farm household members can still contribute knowledge to manage the farm even though they work off the farm.
