Monuments, manifest destiny, and Mexico

Article Abstract:

The survey of the US-Mexico borderline, which followed the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, was a story of heroism, skill, and endurance and one of the greatest events in US political history. The monuments erected by the boundary-survey played a pivotal role in securing the line after the Mexican-American War that marked on the ground the southernmost edges of the nation, becoming fundamental points of reference in subsequent boundary disputes.
