The meaning and relevance of the 'Idea of Europe' in the context of a multicultural and multi-ethnic continent that increasingly draws on the presence and practices of people from non-European backgrounds is presented. The idea of Europe, even in its contemporary use, remains an ideal based on a Christian-Enlightenment-Romantic heritage, noblized by supporters of European integration as the bridge between diverse European national cultures.

Scholars are concerned that globalization will end geographic nations only because they see the world territorially while globalization seen relationally does not threaten nations. Instead, relational globalization emphasizes intermingling, interdependence and connections between cultures, leading to greater dispersion of social, political and economic life and increases the likelihood of hybridization.
