Multiculturalism and museums: discourse about others in the age of globalization

Article Abstract:

Ethnographic museums are affected by postmodern trends, by postcoloniality and multiculturalism, and now seem quaint. As long as development is uneven, however, there will be discourse about 'others.' The museum is a kind of library on display and has a role in making visible the foundations and narrative structures of western knowledge about the nature of the world. Museums have been compared to universities and to theater and may be seen as sites of power. There are many ways to see difference between cultures. There is a move toward public participation of various types.
