National priorities in academic research-strategic research and contracts in renewable energies

Article Abstract:

The provision of grants for solar and bioenergy research in Canada are analyzed. Results show that solar energy research received double the amount of grants received by bioenergy research. The number of projects per researcher and the number of researchers who obtained grants without direct involvement in these fields was also higher for solar energy. The quality of publications available on a subject was found to have a major influence on the provision of grants.

The public sector as first user of innovations

Article Abstract:

The Canadian public sector was found to be the first user of innovations, using 25% of all innovations surveyed. Major public sector users of innovation are hospitals, electrical energy, defense, state administration, railway services and telecommunications. The public sector is also a potential user of 13% of all patents and the buyer of 8% of the Canadian manufacturing industry's output. However, all these findings are for a small group of supplier industries.

Predicting the most likely diffusion sequence of a new technology through the economy: the case of superconductivity

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted on the prediction of the diffusion sequence of a new technology through the economy. Superconductivity was chosen as the sample technology. A stochastic model was developed to provide benchmarks for the monitoring of the progress of the new technology. Results proved that the emphasis of technological monitoring depends on the industry from which the company being considered is a member.
