Navajo uranium workers and the effects of occupational illnesses: a case study

Article Abstract:

A study of the effects of occupational illnesses on Navajo uranium workers indicates psychological and physical trauma suffered by these American Indians. Since the workers and residents were not informed about the hazardous effects of radiation, they failed to make rational decisions regarding their health and employment. In addition, unique cultural beliefs and economic factors are found to impact on workers and families whether they received health, legal and social services or not. As a result, the Navajos feel a sense of betrayal by the government and their employers.
