That 'certain age.' (what age groups does this term encompass)(On Language)(Column)

Article Abstract:

The term 'a certain age' has its English roots in a 1754 usage, when a writer lamented that there was no term for spinsters. Currently the term probably refers to people in their 50s. 'Long in the tooth' another such term reverts back to horses' teeth and how they grow as the horses age.
