On the birth and growth of cities: laissez-faire and planning compared

Article Abstract:

Alternate cycles of laissez-faire and planning are required for the efficient growth of cities. A laissez-faire development of city systems alone does not ensure the efficient growth of cities. This path misses out on the optimal time when the large cities should already be dispersed into new settlements. Since such timing requires the mass resettlement of many interested parties, the laissez-faire city systems develop in cycles of booms and bursts. Planning can establish each new city at the most opportune time and nurse it through the unstable periods. As the economy enlarges, the duration of the necessary planning varies.

Taxes and allowances in a dynamic equilibrium model of urban housing with a size-quality hierarchy

Article Abstract:

A dynamic simulation prototype of the housing market in Chicago, IL, to evaluate the effects of an income tax, a property tax, and a housing allowance is presented. It was found that income tax treats differently housing conversions from huge industrial costs as these are nondeductible. All housing guidelines in isolation is distortionary in a totally competitive housing market. A housing allowance designed to enhance the average housing quality used by the poor is able to boost efficiency by partly compensating for the deadweight losses of the taxes.

The formation and growth of specialized cities: efficiency without developers or Malthusian traps

Article Abstract:

Economic developments that result in city formation, growth and specialization in goods or services are discussed. The evolution of city through various phases is also discussed from a starting point when a small lot of population grows and the manufacturing and services grow correspondingly to a point of efficiency that closes in on specialization. On reaching the specialization stage, without any effort from developers the market itself gives birth to a new city on the periphery.
