Planning and the science of human settlements

Article Abstract:

City planning has laid the foundation for the science of human settlements through an evolutionary process that started during the Industrial Revolution. The process continued despite changes that happened during the post-war era and the occurrence of several paradigm shifts. The term human settlements is redefined to include rural settlements to acknowledge that majority of the world's population live in rural regions. The City-Metropolitan Area-Region classification should be replaced with a single term of settlement where human beings live.

Flexible production - flexible education? An agenda for planning education into the 1990s

Article Abstract:

An agenda for urban planning education based on the principles of contemporary social and economic change are presented. New technologies and innovations in university education dictate the dynamics of planning education. There are significant relationships between the economy, society and planning education while the impact of postindustrialism and postmodernism on society suggest that the teaching of city planning should be overhauled. As such, the 21st-century planner would be an entirely different person from his predecessors.

Planning transportation facilities for the elderly in Pittsburgh

Article Abstract:

An analysis of a plan to provide for the transportation requirements of the entire elderly population of Pittsburgh, PA, revealed the need for a very large amount of financing, especially if the target recipients will not contribute to the expense. The mathematical models used in the study, which can be modified to include the actual distribution of the elderly population as an additional constraint, points to a subsidized bus service arrangement as best available alternative.
