Serving at the pleasure of the President: The nomination papers of the United States Senate, 1789-1946

Article Abstract:

Archived nomination papers in Senate records offer a useful source of information to trace the history of the Senate's 'advise and consent role' and for genealogical research regarding presidential appointments. The records of the Senate regarding presidential nominations deals directly with the personal history and qualifications of the individual federal employees and offer a useful, virtually untapped source of information for genealogy research.
