Honoring the legacy of Thurgood Marshall

Article Abstract:

Granting the ABA Section of Individual Rights & Responsibilities' Thurgood Marshall Award to US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit Judge Damon Keith signals the importance of judicial independence to the cause of justice. Many members of the federal judiciary have been targeted for impeachment by Members of Congress because of their opinions. Congress is overstepping its already extensive authority by engaging in these attacks on the judiciary. The courts need to remain independent from partisan politics.

The impact of welfare reform on women

Article Abstract:

Impoverished women struggle to overcome federal and state welfare reforms. The reforms reinforce poverty for many women who lack sufficient education, training or mental and physical health to replace welfare assistance with employment wages. Child care suffers because women lack the resources to nurture their children or to provide suitable day care.
