Political and economic motivations for labor control: a comparison of Ireland, Puerto Rico, and Singapore

Article Abstract:

This article provides a comparative analysis of economic and political policies in Ireland, Puerto Rico and Singapore, focusing on the constraints of the global economy on smaller economies pursuing foreign direct investment to develop export-orientated industrialization (EOI). The ability of governments to meet labor requirements for EOI is believed to be necessary for its success; low wages and labor peace are requirements achieved through labor control policies and repression, which are dominated by political control rather than economic motivation.

Connecting economic models to the real world: Game theory and the FCC spectrum auctions

Article Abstract:

The claim that models in economics supply claims about tendencies and also the view that economics is necessarily done according to the method of isolation are challenged. In cases such as the Federal Communications Commission spectrum auctions, where economics licensed successful policy interventions, its method is not to study tendencies but to study the phenomenon as a whole.
