Practical rationality in social scientific explanation: the case of residential segregation

Article Abstract:

The fact that public attitudes towards race integration are positive is not a deterrent for residential segregation according to race, to remain fairly entrenched in parts of the U.S, which is a result of conflict between modes of practical rationality, and embedded thoughts. As many whites live in segregated conditions, they develop contextual reasons for preserving that way of life, even if such reasons fly in the face of their sense of justice.

Sociological not political: Rawls and the reconstructive social sciences

Article Abstract:

Rawls's Original Position (OP) is discussed as a rational reconstruction of common sense in democratic practices, an approach which resolves the problem of circularity but raises the issue of contextual relativism. Topics include the empirical basis of the OP, rational reconstruction as method, problems with Rawlsian reconstruction, and the problem of contextualism.
