Article Abstract:

Public Housing Authorities that are planning to 'downsize' their present computer technologies or to acquire new computer equipment should be aware of the vulnerability of stored data and the ways of protecting them. It is possible for all the data that an organization needs to continue operations, referred to as 'core automated data,' to vanish without warning. One of the most common threats to the safety of core automated data is the computer virus, which is a computer program that is potentially damaging and contagious. The risk of losing or damaging automated data can be minimized by choosing the technology for automated systems that is most resistant to computer viruses. Automated data can also be protected by implementing organizational policies and procedures that deal with the use and maintenance of computer equipment.

Effective automation implementation: a plan for H/CD agencies

Article Abstract:

Implementing public housing automated data management systems requires careful planning to ensure that these systems are used to their fullest capacity. Before any 'request for proposals' or 'request for bids' are developed and submitted to the Housing and Urban Development for approval, public housing authorities (PHA) must first determine the goals and objectives that they wish to attain by automation. Other considerations include how these goals can be achieved and what budget constraints need to be addressed. More importantly, automation implementation planning should be an on-going process because the regulations and processes governing PHA application software are being altered all the time.
