Smaller enterprises and innovation in the UK: the SPRU Innovations Database revisited

Article Abstract:

An analysis on the revision of the SPRU Innovations Database revealed that small to large enterprises have been a weak source of technological innovation in the United Kingdom. Such an event may be attributed to the reclassification of 20% of small enterprises as large companies. It was also found that small manufacturing firms were not able to generate large share of listed innovations in relation to their employment share. It has also been cited that innovative intensity and company size of manufacturing firms must be represented in a j-shaped relationship since large enterprises comprise the only sector with disproportionately large innovation share.
