Smooth and rough roads to academic achievement: Retention and race/class disparities in high school

Article Abstract:

The National Educational Longitudinal Study is examined to determine if reading and mathematical achievement trajectories for African Americans, white, poor and nonpoor high school students vary by their experiences with retention. The results indicate that poor, white retained students are particularly disadvantaged by experiences with retention.

The generalizability of multilevel models of burglary victimization: a cross-city comparison

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that criminal victimization is generalizable across neighborhoods and across cities and that neighborhood context is important in explaining burglary victimization. Studies were based on demographic and activity variables, neighborhood disorganization and poverty concentration in three American cities.

Diverse trajectories of cocaine use through early adulthood among rebellious and socially conforming youth

Article Abstract:

The predictions of continuity and change in antisocial behavior over time are examined. Social ties to schools, families, religion and the labor market have helped differentiate youth who refrain from, maintain, or desist from the use of cocaine in early childhood.
