Sorting the hope from the hype: Practical suggestions for community-based AIDS treatment education

Article Abstract:

Thousands of Americans living with HIV and AIDS were given hope with the rapid approvals of new antiviral drugs and the new 'hit it hard and early' medical model for treatment. However few AIDS service providers have considered the consequences of medical advances, and the issues raised by new AIDS drugs need long-term planning, restructuring, and interagency cooperation. Community-based treatment education provides time, information and emotional support, but there are barriers to its effectiveness which need to be overcome.

A view from the field

Article Abstract:

Many adult participants in HIV/AIDS training sessions have shown confusion about basic facts. There is a need to reinforce the flagging advocacy for the activist vision of HIV/AIDS education, and to consider the limitations of the standard AIDS 101 approach. A framework for in-depth prevention efforts has been developed, including workshops where students discuss HIV infection within a framework of activities and outcomes that they themselves elicit.

Older Americans with HIV/AIDS

Article Abstract:

Risk groups have been a focus of HIV prevention and education, but this narrow focus has hampered HIV/AIDS education and prevention efforts to the detriment of women and older adults. The focus has been on younger adults and there is a need to introduce programs specific to aging, concentrating on harm-reduction techniques, HIV-testing and safer sex practices. Such prevention initiatives for older adults can be effective when properly formulated.
