Sectoral sources of metropolitan growth

Article Abstract:

The orthogonalization scheme concept offers an effective tool for utilizing vector autoregression models, particularly in evaluating the role played by industrial sectors on metropolitan growth. This shift-share principle-based approach allows researchers to identify industry shocks prevalent in the national and local levels. Among these shocks, public sector and manufacturing employment have been found to create the most profound impact on metropolitan growth.

Urban productivity, urban unemployment, and labor market policies

Article Abstract:

The Harris-Todaro model of regional, urban and development economics fails to integrate the full impact of government regulation of labor productivity. The inclusion of efficiency wages completes explanation of the effects of some policies, particularly those using a two-region development scale. However, some welfare and policy results of the original model are changed, such as the relation between urban wage increases and welfare and income.
