Susto and soul loss in Mexicans and Mexican Americans

Article Abstract:

The contemporary descriptions of susto among mestizos in Mexico and Mexican Americans in south Texas and explores the link between susto and soul loss in detail. The conclusion arrived at indicates that only a few participants were aware of susto and soul loss, soul loss need not necessarily be a part of susto but was considered by many as equivalent to death.

Intra- and intercultural variation in the definition of five illnesses: AIDS, diabetes, the common cold, empacho, and mal de ojo

Article Abstract:

This article investigates variations in beliefs about the symptoms, causes, and treatments for five common illnesses among Puerto Ricans, Hispanic Americans, and Mexicans. Findings indicate that there is a significant degree of cultural sharing among groups and that there is little variation in illness definitions despite ethnic and geographical differences.

This article examines the relationship between culture and social organization. Cultural units, or individually defined aspects of culture, work in conjunction to create the concept of cultural status which provides individuals with behavioral guidance, influences cultural transmission, and creates a foundation for social organization.
