Assessing the relationship between the user-based market share and unit sales-based market share for pirated software brands in competitive markets

Article Abstract:

The presence of brand switching and differential piracy among competing brands of software is analyzed. It is argued that such developments can result in the absence of a relationship between the user base of a particular software and the market estimates that are derived from user sales. A diffusion modeling approach reveals that in the spreadsheet category, user-based market share is always below the sales-based market share while the reverse is true for the word processing software category.
