Cohesion in the European Community: a key imperative for the 1990s?

Article Abstract:

Regional economic disparities within Europe and how policy initiatives under the current move toward integration would affect such disparities are examined. Current regional inequality in the European Community (EC) is defined. Regional income distribution is cited as a key aspect of any fiscal intervention at the Community-wide level. The EC must implement policies to ensure that less competitive regions realize equal access to full integration, even if income transfers between regions are necessary to mitigate remaining disparities.

The evolution of income disparities among the regions of the European Union

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to investigate the evolution of per capita income disparities among European Union countries over the period 1979-1990. Findings suggested that the process for economic growth in the 1980s was characterized by a tendency towards divergence. Six of the 122 major Functional Urban Regions in the area showed a tendency to grow away from the rest of the European regions. These include Hamburg, Paris, Stuttgart, Munchen, Dusseldorf and Frankfurt.

Regional adjustment and wage flexibility in the European Union

Article Abstract:

Analysis of the resiliency of wages to the European Union policies and particular economic occurrences in the region results in the finding that such a link between wages and region-specific shocks exists minimally. An equilibrium model of wage growth that incorporates such factors as interregional migration is used and processed through regression analysis.
