Innovation, competition and industry structure

Article Abstract:

Data from eight US firms producing assembled products were reviewed and the relationships between product innovation, competition. Their effects on industry structure were also studied using these data as bases. Analysis of the data revealed that the emergence of a dominant product design shifts focus from innovation towards product development, scale production, management techniques and standardization in favor of larger firms. Inability to adapt an organization to this pattern of technological evolution caused eventual failure of the weaker firms.

Cooperation and entry induction as an extension of technological rivalry

Article Abstract:

The role of cooperation in industry and its impact on market entry of start-up companies are investigated. It is seen that competition in major technological areas induce new players to enter 'new subfields,' especially after incumbent firms have established technologies and competency in the new markets by forcing de facto technologies and standards. An analysis of the semiconductor industry reflects these conclusions.
