The Japanese software industry: the 'hub structure' approach

Article Abstract:

The overall structure of the Japanese software industry was analyzed to determine why it is unsuccessful despite its highly productive nature. It is shown that the Japanese software industry focuses on the end-user instead of innovation. This produces a tendency towards customized software while ignoring the development of packaged software and inhibiting the evolution of independent software developers.

Codified-tacit and general-specific knowledge in the division of labour among firms: a study of the software industry

Article Abstract:

Research into the organization and codification of knowledge in software companies is presented. Particular attention is given to different economic incentives to codification. It is suggested that the need to boost the communication and knowledge exchange with external agents encourages companies to invest in knowledge codification.
