The Swiss urban development strategy: a polycentric urban network

Article Abstract:

The Swiss federal government launched a national spatial development strategy in May 1996 to solve the problems in urban development. The primary problems in urban development are that major activities are focused on two key urban centers, and the usual city problems of traffic and air pollution. The national strategy involved the implementation of a polycentric urban network based on present urban pattern. While the strategy still supports the federalistic state structure of the country, it also enhances the competitive position of Switzerland in the global market.

Islamabad after 33 years

Article Abstract:

Certain lessons were learned in the years that have gone by since a Master Plan for the city of Islamabad, Pakistan, was drawn up by Doxiadis Assoc in 1960. Among them are that plans should be adequate but simple for them to be implementable. This can be done by using straight lines, repetitive elements, clearly defined shapes and uses. City planners should not be overambitious and their objectives should match existing resources. Plans should not be static but be dynamic to provide room for growth at every stage of development.

Doxiadis, is the perfect example of an urban road network built upon the principles of proper configuration, hierarchy and spacing. The through traffic is confined to the arterial road network while local traffic use collector and local roads. However, road safety is not satisfactory due to a shortage of traffic engineers and an inefficient Traffic Police.
