The ears have it: a web search tool for investigation case files from the Chinese exclusion era

Article Abstract:

In 1882, the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed which barred immigration on the basis of race and class. Files of such barred persons are part of a collection of investigative case files at NARA-San Francisco. The EARS web site reveals whether NARA has a case file for a particular person, plus the case file number and a smattering of information about that person.

An alleged wife: one immigrant in the Chinese exclusion era

Article Abstract:

The story of Chew Hoy Quong and his 'alleged wife', Quok Shee who are among the thousands of victims of immigration from the Chinese Exclusion Acts trying to enter United States in 1916, is illustrated. Their misfortune that began in thirty-fourth year of the Chinese Exclusion Act, which was full of hardship, tenacity, and sadness, is depicted.

The Federal Register, created by Federal Register Act 1934, publishes regulations that affect the daily lives of all American citizens. The importance of the Federal Register as a legal newspaper and its printing methods through web and print media are discussed.
