The hidden epidemic: confronting sexually transmitted diseases
Article Abstract:
The Committee on Prevention and Control of STDs convened to discuss the health and economic consequences of STDs. The committee has found that STDs and their detrimental effects on health are hidden from public attention because of biological factors such as the lack of signs and symptoms in infected persons and social factors such as the lack of access to health care. Health consequences of STDs include cancer, reproductive health problems, complications for pregnant women and death. Economic consequences, on the other hand, were estimated at $10 billion in 1994.

The HPV/condom controversy provides opportunities for education
Article Abstract:
Debate about the effectiveness of condoms in preventing Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection can be seen within the context of wider discussion about sexually transmitted infection education. It is argued that there is a risk of politicizing HPV and using it to promote abstinence from extra-marital sex.

Microbicides: expanding the options for STD prevention
Article Abstract:
Issues concerning the role of topical microbicides in sexually transmitted disease (STD) prevention are discussed. There has been slow progress on this issue, even though research provides evidence that microbicides are a viable method for STD prevention.
