The structure of uncultivated wilderness: land use beyond the extensive margin

Article Abstract:

An agent-based model of shifting cultivation that explains patterns of land use and forest structure was described. The model explained the empirical observation that individual agents use multiple rotation ages which is consistent with the institutional environment of many indigenous peoples. The model was then applied to the problem of rural violence in Brazil. Suggestions for extending the framework to global change were given.

The Grail quest as illumination

Article Abstract:

Legends and stories regarding the search for the Holy Grail have differed in terms of the type of item being sought and the purposes and effects of the search. On the other hand, these stories are similar in a sense that a heroic character with a sense of purpose is created. Some of the stories that have been developed include the movie 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,' the poem 'Li Contes del Graal' and the epic ' Parzival.'
