Total factor productivity growth in manufacturing: a regional approach using linear programming

Article Abstract:

The total factor productivity (TFP) growth in state manufacturing from 1977 to 1989 was measured using nonparametric linear programming methods. The TFP growth is divided into efficiency change and technological change, with the isoquant serving as the reference technology. Results show a strong growth in the TFP in the manufacturing sector from 1983 to 1989, indicating the end of slowdown in TFP. Moreover, technological change during the recovery period showed a capital using bias, while a labor using bias was exhibited during the slowdown period, 1977 to 1983.
