Trade and environment

Article Abstract:

Trade and environmental protection are two inseparable and intertwined issues. Focusing on one to the detriment of the other would be a mistake. Policy makers should aim for the establishment of global environmental standards, employ unilateral and multilateral trade sanctions which violate environmental laws, utilize government subsidies for pollution control equipment, and apply international trade agreements such as the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade as a way to improve international environmental standards.

Legal institutional aspects of river basin development

Article Abstract:

Two principles of international law can be applied to the use of water resources. These are the principle of equitable use which considers the interests of all riparian countries and the use of one's property in such a way that it does no damage to the other properties. Funding for these waterworks can come from the World Bank, the International Finance Corp, the International Development Assn, the Interamerican Development Bank, the Asian Development Bank and several international regional institutions.

The global partnership for environment and development

Article Abstract:

The protection of the marine environment requires a proactive instead of a reactive approach. It entails the use of precautionary strategies, environmental impact assessments, quality standards for classified substances and a comprehensive strategy for mitigating the damaging effects on land, air and water. International cooperation among the institutions dealing with the seas and coastal areas should be enhanced and the ties between these institutions must be strengthened.
