Transgressing sex and gender: deconstruction zone ahead?

Article Abstract:

Sex and gender have traditionally been seen as a clear division between male and female, with no possibility of a middle ground. However, there is growing evidence that this rigid classification system may fail to properly reflect the diversity of experiences of individual sex and gender. For the transgenderist, internal gender identity is not aligned with the one society expects on the basis of genital sex. It must be recognized that transgender identity is totally separate from sexual orientation, and in many ways could make the concept of sexual orientation obsolete.
