Transsexuality, identity, and empowerment: a view from the front lines

Article Abstract:

Transsexuals are people whose physical gender does not match their internal gender and so they seek support and treatment to resolve this conflict. The Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center has a program called the Gender Identity Project that includes group support sessions for transsexuals to allow them to share their experiences and receive support from others with similar backgrounds. The gender identity of transsexuals needs to be accepted and they should be given support in their decisions because to do otherwise would require them to internalize their conflict.

Article Abstract:

The article critically examines Charles Taylor's work, focusing on his identity holism that is the basis of his expressivist understanding of identity as self-realization through expression. His concept of identity holism leads to the very idea of individual autonomy that it intends to refute.
