Sex Roles and Leadership Revisited

Article Abstract:

A reappraisal is offered of a fifteen year old statistical study relating to the leadership abilities of college women. It was demonstrated then, that females with superior leadership characteristics abrogated their assertive roles when interfacing with college males, even if the males exhibited less dominance. In the light of modern changes, and with the introduction of a feminine taks situation added to the original masculine and neutral confrontations, highly dominant men and women were paired with their lower dominant counterparts, in an updated re-evaluation survey. All pairings proved out their predictive assumptions except for highly dominant women, who adopted leadership roles only when faced with a female- oriented task. Task control and modification of appropriate role modeling partially surmounted the disinclination of qualified highly dominant women to embrace leadership positions in 'real world' situations.

A mother's story

Article Abstract:

A woman shares her experiences as a mother of an AIDS victim. She recounts her feelings of helplessness in the face of a disease which involves grave physiological and psychosocial difficulties. With the help of support groups and family members as well as their courage to face reality, the two women live their lives as best as they can. These experiences have taught them the significance of speaking out their feelings and of dealing with helplessness.
