What is an international criminal court? As negotiations on the establishment of an ICC start, the debate heats up

Article Abstract:

The committees drafting the treaty that will establish the International Criminal Court are faced with issues crucial to the Court's credibility, autonomy and effectiveness. Jurisdictional issues and questions of how cases will be brought to the Court are central to this debate. Jurisdiction will likely be limited to genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. It appears that the Court will have inherent jurisdiction over genocide, and states parties could select other cases. The treaty should place greater emphasis on prosecutorial autonomy, should limit the UN Security Council's influence and should provide for independent funding.

Eliminating discrimination against women: the push for an international treaty

Article Abstract:

The United States is a holdout on ratifying the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and 161 countries, including the United Kingdom, Canada, France, and Italy have already ratified this treaty. The UN adopted CEDAW in Dec 1979, and the document requires states to condemn discrimination against women, obliging signatories to take concrete steps to eliminate such discrimination and to submit reports indicating what they have done to carry out provisions of the Convention. A list of CEDAW's provisions is given.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Article Abstract:

World War II and the Holocaust implied the UN Commission on Human Rights to write the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The UN adopted the document on Dec 10, 1948, and marks its 50th anniversary in 1998 as the primary international statement of the fundamental rights of human beings. The document's principles have formed a part of constitutions and courts around the world and given rise to many international treaties and covenants.
