Current urban innovations in the Netherlands

Article Abstract:

Four Dutch projects that have been launched to enhance the living conditions in the urban areas are discussed. These include Mecatorplein, Amsterdam's urban revitalization project, Vlissingen' restructuring program for its post-war residential communities, Haarlem's ecological neighborhood development project and Maastricht's anti-graffiti project. Netherlands' urban innovation projects have been successfully implemented through the contributions of the central and local governments, social housing corporations and employes' organizations.

Pre-recycling: rethinking on urban innovation in the Netherlands

Article Abstract:

Several Dutch projects have been launched in the early 1990s by city governments to promote environmentally sound building in the suburbs and recycle and reuse existing buildings and infrastructures. These include Amsterdam's Mercatorplein project, Rotterdam's Muller-pier project and the Romolenpolder project. This type of city renewal program has been initiated to provide present and future house and building owners the flexibility of using their space.

Historic core and current urban design

Article Abstract:

Cities should be seem more as major phenomena of architectural research than objects of economic and ideological choices. Therefore, modern cities need to prioritize preservation of their historic beginnings that in turn inspire new designs.
