Women in national legislatures: across-national analysis

Article Abstract:

The number of women elected to the nation's Senate and House of Representatives has remained small despite the presence of female suffrage since the 1920s. The proportion of women in the political elite of other nations is similarly small. A cross-country model of the percentage of women in national legislatures in 1988 is constructed and its results compared with that of a model for 1975. The general processes influencing the number of women in national politics using a large cross-national model is analyzed and discussed.

An analysis of payload growth for major U.S. and European launch vehicles

Article Abstract:

The technological development of the US and European satellite launch vehicle industry is investigated. Specifically, payload versus time graphs for US and European unmanned launchers in operation are fitted to logistic s-curves to study the 'degree to which each vehicle family' is nearing its expected payload limit. The results show that US launch vehicles are approaching their 'point of diminishing returns' in contrast to the anticipated growth of Europe's Ariane launchers.
